Buying someone a bag when you do not know their exact taste is the classic end-of-year gamble. It comes down to three decisions — colour, model, budget — and none of them has to be left to chance.
The real problem is not the bag, it is the information
The person buying almost never knows three things: the colour the recipient actually wears, the format they use Monday to Friday, and what they already own.
A jelly bag has one advantage on exactly this point: it has no size. It cannot be too tight or too long. The only risk left is taste, and taste can be worked out with a little method.
Which colour to give when you do not know
Our colours do not all carry the same risk. We sort them into three families, and that ranking is the useful part of this guide.
The neutrals go anywhere. Pearl and Onyx on the Jelly Firkin, Ivory on the Jelly Croco, Cloud on the Baguette Firkin. These are the colours to pick when you have no information at all: they settle onto a wardrobe that already exists without contradicting any of it, and they do not depend on a season.
The pastels are half a gamble. Sky, Mint, Butter, Blush, Lilac, Lavender, Amethyst, Cotton Candy, Lemon. Softer to the eye than they look in photographs, they are easy to wear from spring through summer. Worth considering if you have already seen the person wearing light tones.
The brights are a real gamble. Cherry, Sunset, Lagoon, Cherry Blush, Azure, Jade, Candy. Superb on the right person, awkward on the wrong one. Only give one if you have proof: a red jacket, a colourful accessory worn often, a recent photograph. Without proof, go back to the neutrals.
Which model, going by use rather than by age
Age tells you less than people think. Two questions are enough: what does she carry, and where is she going?
Someone who goes out with a phone, keys and a lipstick has no need of a large format. The Mini Jelly Firkin will suit her better, and it comes in the same twelve colours as the signature model — so you lose nothing on colour. The gap between the smallest and the largest model is €8.90. So the budget should not be making the decision for you: choose the format that matches the use.
Giving small: the charm on its own
This is the most underrated option. A charm can be chosen without knowing anything about format or wardrobe, it clips onto a bag the person already owns, and it costs between €17.00 and €27.50. Candy Cord is €17.00, Chili, Bandana Cord and Nazar Cord are €21.50, and Cherry, Nazar and Sandal are €27.50.
Two uses: the modest gift that stands up on its own, and the addition that turns a bag you have already bought into a composed present.
The argument that settles it
A jelly bag is a visible object. Coloured, translucent, it gets noticed in a street, in an office, in a photograph. That is what separates it from a gift that is useful but silent: it does not end up in a drawer, it goes out. And every time it goes out, it reminds the owner who chose it.
It is also the reason to be careful about colour. Something that gets noticed that much only gets worn if the person is happy to carry it. A neutral worn every day beats a bright admired in a wardrobe.
What to know before you order
