The translucent plastic bag is not new. It came back. What changed between its disappearance and its return is not public taste — it is the material.

A popular object before it was a fashion object

Clear plastic entered the wardrobe from below, and that is what makes it interesting. Beach bags, market totes, swimming-pool pouches, sandals moulded in a single piece: the material established itself first where leather could not survive — water, sand, salt. It was washable, coloured all the way through, mass-produced and sold for almost nothing.

That origin explains two things. First the shape: a moulded object has no seams, it has walls. The translucent bag does not imitate leather goods; it follows a different manufacturing logic. Second, the way it was regarded. For a long time it was treated as a stopgap accessory, not as a piece you keep.

The big wave: the 1990s into the 2000s

This is the moment the object becomes a fashion phenomenon in its own right. The clear or smoke-tinted bag leaves the beach and arrives in the city. It appears in candy colours, in structured shapes, with moulded handles and visible clasps. You can see through it, and that is part of the game: the contents of the bag become an element of style.

The material of that period is almost always flexible PVC. The choice makes sense. It is cheap, it takes colour easily, it can be heat-sealed, it moulds in long production runs. For a piece sold at a low price and intended to last a season, it was the right industrial answer.

Why they disappeared: a material reason

The usual story is that fashion simply lost interest. That is a short explanation. The jelly bag first failed to last, and it failed for a reason of chemistry.

Rigid PVC is not flexible by nature. It is made flexible by adding plasticisers, molecules that slot in between the chains of the polymer. But those plasticisers are not bonded to it: they migrate. They evaporate slowly, they pass into whatever they touch, they leave with washing and with heat. As they leave the material, the bag loses exactly what they were giving it. It hardens. It turns brittle in the cold. It cracks at the folds — that is, at the corners and at the base of the handles, where the material works every time the bag is carried.

Then there is the yellowing. PVC degrades under light and heat, and that degradation shows: clear turns yellow, pastels go dull. A new bag was bright; the same bag, two summers later, was not. It became tacky to the touch, and then it split.

That is the real reason it was abandoned. An accessory you cannot keep beyond one season ends up being seen as disposable — and a disposable object leaves fashion from the bottom, not from the top.

What changed: TPU

The current return would not mean the same thing if it were happening in the same material. It is happening in another one: TPU, thermoplastic polyurethane. It is an elastomer, and the difference comes down to a single sentence. Its softness is not added, it is structural.

TPU alternates rigid segments and flexible segments within its own polymer chain. So it has nothing to lose as it ages: there is no plasticiser to migrate away. What follows is the behaviour of a technical material. It stays supple, including in cold weather. It takes friction — that resistance to abrasion is why it is used on exposed equipment. It does not yellow the way PVC did.

A return that is also a correction

This is the argument we make. The jelly bag is not coming back because a fashion cycle mechanically brings it round every twenty years. It is coming back because the flaw that killed it has been fixed. The shape did not have to change; what changed is the material underneath the shape.

That shift changes the status of the object. A translucent bag that lasts several years is no longer a seasonal accessory. It can be structured, carried daily, loaded. The frosted finish in particular pulls the material towards the mineral rather than the novelty: it diffuses light, it lets the contents be guessed at without displaying them, and it shows fingerprints less.

That is the basis we work from. The Jelly Firkin is made of frosted TPU, coloured all the way through. The Jelly Croco adds a croc-effect relief to the same moulding logic. The rest of the collection applies the same principles to other formats.

A popular object, lost to a technical weakness, brought back by a material that corrects it: that is the trajectory of an object, not simply a trend.
